Ubuntu 8.04 release party in Montreal

Image
This is an invitation to all who will be in or around Montreal, QC, Canada next April 24th. Full party info and details at: http://www.ubuntu-qc.org/ubuntu-804-invitation We’ll be partying real hard at St-Sulpice bar and I hear other parties are organizing in Quebec province. I’d also like to challenge other party organizers, do you think you can have the biggest party out there ? Last time we had close to 200 people in Montreal, this time we are a bit better organized. One specific thing that has helped us a lot is inviting people IN ADVANCE and PERSONALLY We welcome all to copy and improve our french and english invitation . We are also using a Facebook event for RSVPs , local mailing lists and contacting media. We’ve lined up a few sponsors too for swag (and more). Any further ideas ? PARTY ON! How to install anything in Ubuntu guide

Web site Cutler Software posts a detailed guide to installing any Linux app from the perspective of a new-to-Linux Windows user. The guide starts with the basics of Synaptic (sort of the Add/Remove software tool for Linux), delves into installing apps from the command line, then finishes with steps necessary to manually install a package. When I installed Ubuntu in a triple-boot setup with Vista and XP , this straight-forward guide would have come in so handy. If you've made the move to Ubuntu - or you're considering making that leap - this guide is a must-bookmark. — Adam Pash How to install ANYTHING in Ubuntu! [Cutler Software]

Create a Linux Antivirus Server to Protect eMail - A Brief How to

Image
Does Ubuntu Linux Really Need Antivirus Software?” Where there was a bit of discussion as to whether Linux needed antivirus software installed. There were some very informative comments from readers, which showed that in reality it would be very difficult to develop Linux based viruses, and that the real use would be to protect Windows users. After some thought and a bit of playing, I was introduced to ClamAV . For those not familiar, their site description says: “ …Clam AntiVirus is an open source (GPL) anti-virus toolkit for UNIX, designed especially for email scanning on mail gateways. It provides a number of utilities including a flexible and scalable multi-threaded daemon, a command line scanner and advanced tool for automatic database updates. The core of the package is an anti-virus engine available in a form of shared library… “ For me at least, this was a clear challenge to roll up my sleeves and create a small antivirus server (used to scan email). This would be useful to...
